The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
