The Global Health Body Raises Alert Over Critical Lack of Weight-Loss Jabs

Less than one in 10 patients eligible to benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy can access them, states the WHO as it releases its initial recommendations on the drugs.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently obese, it is calling for increased and just availability to these injectable treatments.

Per estimates, over two billion will be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidelines acknowledges that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be managed with comprehensive and lifelong treatment," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, constrained manufacturing, and logistical bottlenecks are key hurdles to widespread availability to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing significant body mass, says the organization.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Despite the current most favorable scenario, the manufacturing of such drugs would only suffice for about 100 million people – under 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The guideline calls on countries and companies to increase access, by strategies like licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the main component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in multiple countries in 2026.

The Way Obesity Jabs Function

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own hormone to slow digestion, suppress the appetite and increase the sense of being full so people eat less.

Individuals typically start to lose weight after several weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Evidence suggests people may put most of the weight back on a year later of discontinuing the drug, because their usual appetite come back.

Being carrying excess weight increases your chance for contracting health problems, like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and some cancers.

Excess weight concerns people in countries worldwide and was associated with over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
