The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
